Our day started beside the calm waters of Ullswater, looking for something fun to do with the kids and Lowther Castle turned out to be the perfect choice. Just a short drive away, it’s one of those places that feels magical the moment you arrive.

Inside the castle, we explored the exhibition and learned about the history of the Lowther family. The storytelling is brilliant, and the kids loved spotting old photographs, artefacts and models that brought the past to life.

Stepping outside, the ruins are breathtaking. Towering walls, open archways and long views across the gardens make it feel like you’ve walked straight into a fantasy film set. The gardens themselves are just as impressive from peaceful Japanese corners to colourful rose gardens bursting with life. Every turn reveals something new.

Hidden among the trees, we found rope swings that the kids couldn’t resist. Simple fun, but the kind that makes a day out unforgettable. There’s also an absolutely epic adventure playground here. It was far too busy to film (and not appropriate to do so), but trust us it’s one of the best we’ve ever seen.

We also joined a crafting session, perfect for the more creative kids. Our daughter loved making something to take home, and it was a lovely break between exploring the gardens and ruins.

After wandering through the grounds, we finished our visit with one last look at the castle ruins still just as impressive as when we first arrived. Lowther Castle is a brilliant family day out, full of history, nature and adventure.

If you’re staying around Ullswater or exploring the Lake District, it’s absolutely worth the trip.
